Fifth EC145 delivered to West Penn Allegheny Health System

February 12, 2012

West Penn Allegheny health system logoDallas, Texas – American Eurocopter, the leading provider of helicopters to the U.S. air medical transport industry, today announced the delivery of an EC145® to West Penn Allegheny Health System (WPAHS), the fifth in its LifeFlight fleet.

The aircraft, which was ordered at last year’s Air Medical Transport Conference, is part of a standardization program and will replace an older aircraft in the WPAHS LifeFlight fleet. The addition of the EC145 will help reduce operating costs, increase in-service time and simplify training. The aircraft is being completed at Metro Aviation and is expected to be in service by summer 2012.

“We have an established relationship with American Eurocopter,” said Cathy Fackovec, WPAHS Director of Operations for Emergency Services. “The addition of the fifth EC145 will standardize our fleet and operations. The aircraft is ideal for us and continues to provide us the range, capacity, versatility and reliability we need for our missions.”

LifeFlight helicopters operate in a four-state area, working in conjunction with EMS providers and community hospitals across western Pennsylvania and southeastern Ohio, as well as in parts of West Virginia and Maryland. Its helicopters serve as air ambulances, inter-hospital transports for patients, and flying intensive care units. The program flies an estimated 2,500 missions annually and to date, LifeFlight has completed more than 60,000 missions.

“LifeFlight approached their fleet replacement initiative with a lot of forethought,” said Treg Manning, American Eurocopter’s Vice President of Commercial Sales. “Not only did they select the best aircraft to provide the versatility, reliability and safety attributes they need for their missions, they also chose to standardize their fleet on this platform, which will help them reduce training and maintenance costs.”

The EC145 offers multi-mission capability in a medium-class twin-engine helicopter. It has made its mark in the U.S. market, particularly among air medical service operators – winning competitions based on the aircraft’s speed, advanced glass cockpit, extra-large cabin and exceptional visibility. With high-set main and tail rotors, the EC145 is designed to enhance safety during ground operations.
