About us > Columbus, Mississippi
To meet its growing U.S. business volume, Airbus Helicopters Inc. operates a modern production center of excellence near Columbus, in Northeastern Mississippi's Golden Triangle region. Opened in 2004, this 325,000-sq. ft. facility produces the AS350 B2/B3 AStar commercial helicopter and the U.S. Army's UH-72A Lakota Light Utility Helicopter.
In addition, the plant handles the assembly and customization of other Airbus Helicopters models and also manufactures components for use on new-production helicopters.
In 2006-2007, the Columbus facility was expanded to a total covered area of 325,000 sq. ft. for the UH-72A program, incorporating the Lakota assembly line, flight line, paint shop, warehouse, administrative offices, flight operations and flight test engineering.
Airbus Helicopters Inc. has worked with the East Mississippi Community College to establish training courses in the fields of electrical systems/avionics, sheet metal and mechanics. This has enabled the college to provide a source of skilled workers from the local region to fill job openings at the facility.
American workers, engineers and technicians have been conducting light assembly, FAA certification and field support for AS350 AStar customers from Columbus since 2005. With the installation of a full production line that will become operational during 2014, the AS350 AStar – America’s most popular helicopter – will proudly be made in the USA by American workers. Establishment of this full production line will allow for shorter delivery times, increased customization and customers can see their aircraft being produced.
